Dear Mom,
I really like the USA. Don’t worry, I still love Panama as my home country. I just wanted to write this letter to inform you on how it is similar and how it is quite different as well. It’s customs are so different, but some hit very close to home. I am feeling very weird because I am surprised that I don’t feel homesick. I actually find America very welcoming in a way. But anyways, my main purpose for writing this letter was to inform you on what it’s like here, so let’s get on with it! (That’s an english term I learned from here!)
The people and country here are so different yet so alike. The education here is wonderful. Their literacy rate is 99%! Our education is excellent as well, with us having a 90% literacy rate, so we’re not so behind. All of the religions kind of blend here. It’s like you can move from across the world and still fit in! I like to think of america as a salad that we make back home. You add some lettuce as the base(the english), you then add some tomatoes(the hispanics), you also add some spices( the african americans) and you top it off with some lemon juice( the europeans and the asians).
One thing that is different here is the population. There are so many people here! A lot more than we have back in Panama, but only because this is a large country. I am almost jealous! They use U.S. dollars for their money.I know because I saw a guy give the ice cream man the dollar. They have a free market or traditional economy as well. I read online(something I’m still getting used to) that the life expectancy is a little more than two years more than us. I guess Panama needs to get healthier.
One major difference with this country is there is so much technology. We would be considered rich back home if I brought an iphone to school or even to the mall. We don’t even have a phone back home, but at least we have a computer. I see young girls half my age playing with a so called “ipad”. I dont even know what that is! Panama needs to step up their game with their shipping ports and start ordering some technology.
Well…... Mom…... I have no words. No words at all. My breath is taken away. I cannot believe how easy America has it. To us, it‘s paradise. To them, it’s modern day life. Our different countries are just so…..so….. different! Sure, we have some similarities, but the truth is, America is just more advanced. We are more traditional because we hang on to the past. I hope you have enjoyed my letter mom. I miss you with all my heart and will see you soon!
Sincerely,
Zoey
